Master of Emergency and Disaster Management
Charles Darwin University
Melanie is an emergency specialist with expertise in community-based disaster risk reduction. She has worked as the Information and Planning Officer for the World Health Organization (WHO) in Papua New Guinea(PNG) supporting the country’s national COVID-19 response. Through her work, Melanie has engaged in community development programs and volunteered with the Australian Red Cross in Darwin. She aspires to contribute to the implementation of effective disaster risk reduction strategies in the Pacific region.
Upon her return home to PNG, Melanie intends to work more closely with disaster-vulnerable communities to ensure their planning processes involve bottom-up approaches to knowledge-sharing. This will involve equipping communities with the scientific information and resources needed to understand the risks they face, ultimately guiding decision-making and minimising loss and damage during times of disaster.
