Humanitarian Leadership in the Pacific – 23 August 2019
To coincide with World Humanitarian Day 2019 on 23 August 2019, the Women’s Leadership Initiative hosted a half-day Pacific Leadership seminar on Humanitarian Leadership in the Pacific: Australian and Pacific Perspectives.
The Australian and Pacific Perspectives seminar was held at the University of Sydney, and brought together Pacific scholars, Pacific and Australian leaders, policymakers and academics to share their insights and lessons learned on the topic of humanitarian leadership in the Pacific.
Guests were treated to a panel discussion on women’s inclusion and leadership in humanitarian organisations and responses. One main topic of discussion was the growing impetus for localisation of humanitarian efforts, an idea aligned with international commitments made at the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit.
- Mrs Emeline Siale Ilolahia, Executive Director, Pacific Islands Association of NGOs (PIANGO)
- Mr Loti Yates, Director, National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) Solomon Islands

The event concluded with networking against the beautiful backdrop of the University of Sydney, where Australia Awards scholars connected with speakers, Women’s Leadership Initiative staff, academics, and members of NGOs and the private sector.
