Maryanne Maga

Papua New Guinea
Master of Midwifery, The University of Newcastle

Maryanne is an experienced midwife and nursing manager from Gulf Province in the southern region of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Serving in the rural Provincial Hospital, she has been responsible for training and overseeing the work of junior midwives and advocating for hospital facility improvements, including Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), for birthing mothers.

Passionate about the application of evidence-based midwifery practice, Maryanne hopes her participation in WLI will build the confidence and skills needed to be a strong leader in her profession. Following her on-Award studies, Maryanne wants to see women access maternity services within their own communities in PNG, instead of forcing long travel, often across rivers and oceans. Maryanne is interested in exploring sustainable models of in-community or at-home maternity care that she believes could prevent maternal and neonatal mortality caused by delays in care.
